Spider Coupling Removal

I’m in the process of going through the Masso Conversion process. I removed one of the steppers from my Shapeoko 5 Pro, but I can’t get the spider coupling on the stepper motor to come off.

I’ve fully removed the screws from the coupling on the stepper and placed the stepper motor in a vise, locking the shaft in place via the vise. For the life of me, I can’t get that [expletive deleted] spider coupling to come off.

Is there a trick to this or a process that makes it easier?

That is very odd. I didn’t have this issue when removing the coupler on mine. Can you do me a favor and measure the screw-side diameter?
I’ve got a batch of extra couplers on the way in case someone broke theirs. The motor side is 8mm diameter, but it depends on the screw and supplier. Some screws I’ve worked with have 10mm others have 12mm.
My S5P is at the warehouse and todays a “fun” day to play in my home garage with my Altmill and 1f.

The motor side is 7.97mm

I’m going to grab a bushing puller tomorrow in the hope that it works. I’m trying to document all the steps so I can share them here

Great idea and thank you so much for documenting as much as you can. That will definitely help others!

Did you take both screws out? Mine had 2

I also had to grind shaft down about a 1/16" to make it fit

:man_facepalming: that was it. I didn’t notice the little grub screw. Thanks for saving me a trip to Harbor Freight!

No problem, I’m glad I could help.

looking forward to your writeup!
