New PwnCNC Spindle VFD Programming?

I received my 65mm water cooled Spindle and proceeded through the install and Carbide3d machine setup, to tell it of the VFD install.

I switched the VFD to AUTO and ran the Spindle warmup from the Carbide Motion software. No response from the VFD or spindle. I have not run a cutting program with it yet to determine functionality.

I have seen that there are some settings to change in the VFD, but also see that the VFD is reported to be shipped with the appropriate programming based on my selections at the time of ordering.

Any suggestions or insight as to this specific issue? Does the warmup prompt in Carbide Motion just not work with this configuration?

You might have to hit the green run button, but try typing m3s6000 in the mdi

I have tried the “run” button and it does not correct. I will be playing with it some more this evening and try some things from the MDI screen.

Hitting the run button on manual the knob would activate it in manual mode.

You should be able to have it go in automatic mode by switching it to auto and typing m3s6000 for 6000 rpm.
You’d be looking for the blinking numbers to turn solid. If their not solid you need to hit the run button.
If after commanding 6000 it goes full tilt to 24000 youll need to reconfigure carbide motion for spindle mode

Start from here… choose either the “Spindle Kits” path or the “Spindle Systems” path depending on your purchase.
Please read each phase… there’s only 3… and each phase explains vital information related to how to use your spindle in both manual and automatic modes.

I promise the journey is as important as the destination in this case.

Ok…so we are getting somewhere.

I verified the VFD settings as it was shipped. I then changed the settings as indicated in the YouTube video.

The spindle starts and stops as it should in auto mode.

This is now my hang-up…

When working in the MDI screen and running a test program with different input speeds I have the following results:

M3S500 - VFD turns on and spindle runs up to approximately 2500 RPM.

ANYTHING BELOW S500 IS OFF

M3S600 AND ABOVE - VFD is full RPM to approximately 24000.

I assume this must be a voltage setting or interpretation from the controller.

It is my assumption that the settings in the YouTube video only apply to the 80mm spindle and power input to that spindle. I’m wondering if my 110V 65mm water cooled spindle should have different settings in some area?

**** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ****

This may be something specific to Carbide3d/Shapeoko 5.1 Pro

I continued testing and noted that if the “/” is placed in front of the requested speed (ie. /M3S2000) the speed is controllable as desired. The “/” is requested on the MDI screen, which is also seen on the YouTube video for the updated changes to make everything auto.

I have not tested this yet for a running program.

Thoughts?

Bit runner is currently configured. You need to go thru configuration in carbide motion and change it to vfd spindle.

Bitrunner was verified as being off and VFD was selected when running “setup new machine”.

Pwm works by sending a voltage 0-5v to command various rpm. So commanding 12000 rpm would send 2.5v. There is an ignore below trigger which is why youre getting nothing in 500rpm commanded. You want this ignore below setting.

Bit runner sends 5v without any variation when rpm is commanded. That’s why its going full tilt with just 600 rpm commanded.

Agreed and understood. However it appears that with Carbide Motion version 659 there is no way to disable Bitrunner when VFD Spindle is selected. My earlier version of Carbide Motion had 3 spindle types available and now only 2 ( Compact Router or VFD Spindle). If Compact Router is selected you can check or uncheck Bitrunner (as it would be an e ternal component).

I have a request in to Carbide3d for instructions as to how.to disable it, as there are notations that it is embedded in the software.

I haven’t played in 659 specifically, but i know in previous versions you have to select router, then disable bit runner send the configuration, then go back into settings and select vfd spindle.

I’ll give it a go, perhaps it is just a bug.

I tried looking at the carbide spindle instructions for tips and they made it seem just as easy to deselect bit runner.

They and onefinity copied us on the vfd selection.

I know of a previous case where they had to select router, deselect bit runner (because it was previously ghosted… but enabled), then select vfd spindle

Well that was it. Hopefully that gets fixed soon.

Anyone having this issue here are the steps:

  1. Install all your equipment.
  2. Make any setting adjustments to your VFD.
  3. Run Carbide Motion and select “SET UP NEW MACHINE”.
  4. Go through the prompts. At the spindle selection, choose “ROUTER”. Unchecked “BITRUNNER”.
  5. Complete setup.
  6. Select “SET UP NEW MACHINE”.
  7. This time at spindle selection choose “VFD”. The checkbook for Bitrunner should be unchecked now.
  8. Save all settings and complete setup.
  9. Restart everything.

Thank you for that. It’ll just be a one time thing as long as your configuration file stays the same.

Thanks for sharing the step by step
