Masso 5.09 and ATC. Use at own risk

I don’t know if its a fluke, a me problem or a Masso problem… But after upgrading to 5.09, while in linear tool change 2, it completely skipped the tool change and proceeded to go to the tool path which would have easily broken the bit, probably instantly. Fortunately the height on the tool installed was higher, so it didn’t reach the material work surface.

I shot an email off to Masso about it, and said I’d record it when it was done doing what its doing, if I’m able to duplicate it.

I noticed prior to that my tool slots did disappear from the F4 screen with the upgrade, but I just reallocated them.

Thanks for the heads on this possible issues @Chris. I’ve been working on my ATC tool rack upset and have only used the MDI interface to change tools (e.g. T02M06). I’ll be sure to keep a close eye on my first real run.

Peter confirmed it and recommended those with ATC either utilize MTC or revert to a previous version.

I’m new to MASSO. From what I’ve read a lot of time passes between releases. This ATC issue seems like a serious regression that should be fixed urgently. What is your guess for when there will be a fix?

Would you consider using the 5.1 beta over 5.07?

Is there a masso forum topic or bug report I can add myself to to get updates?

I couldn’t even guess but if I were to, I’d say don’t hold your breath and grab a snickers cause it’s gonna be a while. ATC customers are a very small group of users who this would effect. It will still work using MTC, but Linear tool change 2 is broken. Maybe Linear Tool Change 1 is not???

Historically there was an issue with 5.05 where if you had spindle auto start stop on feedhold selected it would sometimes start when going to tool setter or probe, they pulled it, and released 5.06 within weeks. Thats the version I installed, the difference between 5.06 and 5.07 is it added masso link, which is of no importance to me.
Here is their Version history notes.

5.100 has bugs that I’ve already reported when the beta was first available, and Masso doesn’t recommend anyone use it on a production machine, IE anyone making stuff. The GUI looks nice though, and I can’t wait, but its been at least a year since it was introduced.

You should get email updates to check my workshop when there is a new firmware release. The email updates aren’t sent right when the version is released, but it is within a week or so.
Pretty sure vouching for the bug doesn’t do anything, as they already confirmed its existence.

I got the email update for 5.09, so I’m good there. Slow development, regressions, and bugs is the smell of poorly architected software. I wonder if they had to burn the whole thing down and rewrite it. If that is the case I also wonder how much headroom they have with their hardware. I’d hate to be left stranded due to hardware that has too few MIPS or too little RAM.

I’m guessing that PwnCNC feels good about 5.07 since they are launching The Dominator using MASSO. Given the talk on various forums about Masso’s slow development it doesn’t sound like Daniel could have secured any special deal for a Masso update to support The Dominator. I’m happy to be wrong though.

Things happen. Don’t get wrapped around the axel, this was an informational post…
like “hey, if you’ve been eyeballing 5.09, and you have an ATC… be warned that at the least, linear tool change 2 doesn’t work.”

I installed 5.09 and use type 1 linear tool changer. I have had no issues with this release using type 1.
After installing it i did have to reset all the tool locations, but i always double check all settings from the printed backup.
This release fixed the flaw in the type 1 Atc changer that forced me into the 5.100b beta release, so I’m glad to see it fixes the type 1…

@Chris
Is there a reason we SHOULD use Type 2 vs Type 1? Sounds like (according to @Mrd) he has been successful with ATC using Tool Changer Type 1.

He also has has a mobile tool slide. Movable Tool Slide - #10 by Mrd

Here’s what Masso says about both of them.

Linear Tool Changer (Type 1)

Linear Tool Changer (Type 2)

Personally, I haven’t played with linear tool change 1

FYI MASSO has a post about this bug on their forum.

He gave me an advanced copy of the fixed software. After a booboo resulting in rpms going full tilt, the 5.09.03a software i was given appeared to work without error. The tools maintained their slot allocation too. He also did mention another person’s experience, that was “opposite” of mine.

I also used the opportunity to pitch a small update id like to see (100% speed on override = spindle max, and where your settings are, is where it is (18k=75%))

Version 5.10 was released a few days ago. I think the following item in the release notes is referring to this issue in this topic.

  • Linear Tool Changer Tool Slot Initialization Fix - Fixed issue to ensure tool numbers are unrestricted, even if the number of tool slots is limited, providing better flexibility for setups with manually assigned tool numbers.
