Inductive Proximity sensors

What material works best with these inductive proximity sensors? Aluminum or steel?

Steel. The material should be magnetic.

I see that steel provides about .8” and aluminum provides approximately half of that.

In cases where the distance is preferable at close proximity such as homing, would it be reasonable to think aluminum would be the more suitable option?

You can adjust the pull off distance to whatever you’d like.

Is the aluminum actually doing it, or is it what you have behind it?

My risers/Legs of my CNC are 1/2” aluminum and my hope is to use an unoccupied space under the Y rails as the location for my sensors.

This is a full MASSO upgrade to a CNC router.

It’s supposed to be magnetic, hence Inductive. Naturally aluminum isn’t magnetic, so that’s why I was wondering if it was the aluminum, or what’s behind it.

The idea of mounting it on the lower side of the axis is something i hadn’t considered as being a possibility. Inside and outside edges sure. Reason why i hadnt considered the bottom is because if i wanted/needed to i could activate it with a slap of a screwdriver, or whatever i had in my hand at the time.
Kudos for thinking outside the box, but again, i don’t think it’s the aluminum setting it off
