ER20 Collet Nut ptoblems

Hello,
I had a mishap whilst doing a profile cut, my 1/4" bit broke when I was trying to make a profile cut way too deep due to mis-entry of numbers on my OF CNC using PWN Spindle. But now the collett isnt thghtening fully and therefore not holding the bits in the collets. It would seem that either the threads on the collet nut, on the spindle, or both have been damaged. I can’t see any visible damage to the threads on the spindle and also unable fully see if the threads on the collet nut are the ones that are damaged. I am obviously hoping that it is the nut and not the spindle threads. Since the nut would be easier and quicker to replace.

My question is:

  1. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a temporary fix for it such as thread tape etc?
  2. Apart from trying another collet nut which I dont have, is there any other way to indicate which is damaged?
  3. If the damage is on the spindle threads is there a way to change the chylindrical shank without changing the entire watercolled spindle?

I am under some pressure to complete some jobs to a hard deadline.
Thanks

Hi @wenclem,
I have PwnCNC ATC spindle that uses tool holders, so I don’t have experience with the collet and nut configuration that you have. Are you sure the collet is fully seated in the nut?

Yes it is. Several collets tried. I can actually feel the clink of the nut not tightening.

Just to say that I have sorted it out. Just to share that it was the threads on the Collet Nut and not the spindle (thank god). Which means that the spindle thread set is much stronger than that of the nut, I guess to ensure that it goes first.

Glad to hear you don’t need a spindle repair. Now that you’ve figured it out are you able to meet your hard deadline?

Let’s just say that i’m running the race after dropping the batton, I have a few laps to go so it will be close.

I hope the wind is at your back!
