Spindle Vibration

Hi, I have 2 atc systems, and towards the end of the day yesterday, I started getting a pretty heavy vibration out of my spindle. I tried cleaning, etc. I put the same tools in my other spindle and there was no vibration. Any idea what can cause this? It’s enough vibration to where I can see it in my cuts. I am afraid to run it and do further damage.

Sounds like something is out of alignment.
What happened before this started happening?

Nothing. I was cutting it, changed tools, and when it grabbed the next tool, I had vibration. I its dong now with every tool.

Based on what you’re saying though, it sounds like something is out of alignment and it could have been the nut on top of the holder was loose and jarred the cone

Thanks for your reply what nut are you referring to? i have been going back and forth with Daniel but he seems to think its related to my machine. i checked everything. nothing is loose. i Just find it odd how the vibration with the same tool and tool holder doesnt transfer to my other machine. There is also very little or almost no vibration when there is no tool in there or atleast i can hear but when there is a tool its alot worse

That’s a nut, and when the spindle grabs a new tool, it’s pulling it up into the cone of the spindle, and springs hold it in place.

I would ultimately defer to Daniel expertise and experience.

The way to rule out machine is swap the spindles out. You’ll have to redo all your tool heights after swapping but small price to pay for certainty.

It’s not good to run the spindle without a holder installed for any length of time, and there’s no reason to do it either

So your saying you think the clamp in the spindle could be bent? Is that a serviceable part?

The ruler i cut prior to this happening. the fv smuggler was after and you can see the difference. Its like its not clean. it looks jagged. There is no way that can be the machine causing that.

I’m looking thru a straw and ultimately can’t give you all the answers, so I’m just trying to give you ideas of what it could be, or how to find out by isolating the problem. To my knowledge there’s nothing serviceable unless you do it at your own risk.

I had a problem a long time ago (like with my shapeoko 3 long ago) where my spindle would drop ⅛" or so randomly. After numerous ruined 3d carves, i sat back and watched it being fully aware of my surroundings. Had i not noticed that it would drop every time the AC kicked on, Daniel couldn’t have suggested i get an UPS for my machine without identifying the cause which was due to the brown outs.

I say that to say this. We don’t have all the facts, and we’re looking at the symptoms thru a straw trying to find the problem

I understand i appreciate your help. I just use these machines for my business and downtime sucks lol. I will keep digging it is never just straight forward.
