80mm spindle on the Shapeoko 5 pro

I am interested in upgrading my shapeoko 5pro with a pwn CNC spindle. I am looking at a 110v air cooled as I don’t have 220 available without more major wiring upgrades. I think I am interested in the 80mm version with the pwn CNC adapter plate and mount. Does anyone have any experience with an 80mm spindle on the 5pro? I assume the z head will drop when I power off the machine but I want to make sure the Z axis has enough power for the 80mm spindle.

There’s hundreds of Shapeoko 5s using the PwnCNC 80mm spindles. We used 80mm spindles on the Shapeoko 3 with HDZ in the beginning, went to the Shapeoko Pro next and then to the 5. We created the PwnCNC spindle mount original for the 5 and adapted it for use with other CNCs. You’ll be surprised at how much of a improvement it is and your HDZ will handle it like its a feather.

Thanks for the information. I assumed it would be fine but wanted to ask to make sure.

I am a new user of the 80mm spindle and today for the first time I have just experienced the dropping of the HDZ when powered off. I am unable to find it now but I thought that I may have seen a potential solution?

We don’t have a solution, but have an article documenting

Z Slider Dropping under Weight of Spindle

Thanks for the links, Chris. It appears that Carbide 3D are going to release a standalone gas strut soon.

Yep, waiting for it to go live

I wonder if it will fit the S3 with the HDZ or could be adapted. The link you have pointed to here is not working.

As it happens, I can wait if PwnCNC is going to offer something similar. I would rather give you the business.

This looks to be a useful online stop.
