3D model of The Dominator

We are starting to develop and design the fixturing for our Dominator. It would be extremely helpful if we had a 3D model of some sort (even without details) of the machine and of the 4th axis. Would that be possible to get?

Thanks,
Matt

Yes, i do plan to share the 3d model… but i’ve been pretty laser beam focused on the anodization line and getting it up and fully operational.
We are so very close with that… just waiting on some safety gear to arrive before i can record and share some of that. Then next week we’ll do our first production run of parts.

After that I will be cleaning up the model and looking into what’s necessary to share the model.

Sounds great! Thanks for being so transparent and quick with your updates. Rooting for you guys hard!

Hey Daniel,

that’s what Onefinity never did, nor did they even provide all the 2D measurements that people wanted in their docs. These were always kind of uncomplete. They said it would make the machine too easy to be copied :).

Interesting, eh?

Ha… yeah. Hmmm…

I definitely want to release it, just trying to find good software to do it with. I like how Sienci Labs releases theirs, but really hate that software specifically.
Not sure if Fusion has something similar that can be publicly accessed… but that would be ideal.

Does anyone know if Fusion has such a thing? Sharing a model with logging and what-not so we can maybe know who accessed it. In order to provide updates as they are released.

Hey Daniel,

there seems to be a few:

Being a Fusion 360 user and waiting on a Dominator, I would love to have access to a 3D model. Since I 3D print most everything I use with my CNC’s, having access would definitely open up the possibilities and reduce the trial and error involved.

While this would not be “fully open source” I wonder if you could handle it like the other 3d maker files that you provide on your site. I have purchased many and its really nice/simple way to always have a repository to go to if I need one of the files, and the emails you provide when there is an update are such an easy way of saying there is a new update available.

Perhaps there is a way to bundle it into the purchase package of the dominator? I.e someone who has purchased the dominator gains access to the 3d cad in .step (so it can be opened in pretty much any cad program) so they can make accessories for their machine etc. That way you would have traceability for to those who would have the full model in .step and could provide updates to those owners as changes happen. It would also allow owners to exchange new accessories/ideas of improvements between one another as well.

You could also release a .stl or other file type that is non-editable, to the general public so that people can get an idea of general space claim etc, but protect the designs from direct copy.

That’s not a bad idea.. i could tie it to the purchase as our file-sharing plugin allows for that easily.
I don’t mind if folks design products they hope to sell for the machine or personal use.

I think our biggest concern is that trolling competitor and how they could use this to their advantage to hurt us. Especially since they continue, evidenced as late as last week, to do things purposely to harm us.

I agree with you 100%. Sadly there are far too many people out there who are of poor moral character. I believe in your company so much and everything you do, the way you go about business and the dedication you have to your customers. I don’t want to see your hard work taken advantage of so keeping the design files locked down except to those customers who purchased a machine, seems like good route to go. You could even go a step further and establish NDA’s for the files to prevent someone from sharing them. People who are committed to your company and your way of doing business would likely have no issue with that, I know I wouldn’t.

Also, many of the accessories that people may want to consider making/designing, are likely achieved with just measured drawings of the cross sections of the 80/20 extrusions and a few other general dimensions. As a full model of the machine would not be needed to create work holding brackets, tool holders, storage solutions, etc. Maybe an “accessory design pack” could be created with files of sections of extrusions and a pdf of a few other machine measurements. I could envision like a step file with a 8" section of the extrusions so I could model a bracket and put it together in an assembly. You can get the cad files from 8020 today, but packaged up as a bundle for easy download through you would be a great way to offer a “maker solution” for those who haven’t purchased a machine, but want to maybe make accessories etc.
