I’m seriously considering purchasing a Dominator Pro 4x4 for my CNC machining business. The primary use would be aluminum and plastics, especially larger plate work that I can’t currently fit on my smaller vmc.

For anyone using a Dominator to machine aluminum, I’d really appreciate some real-world feedback.

What kind of cutting parameters have you been able to run successfully in 6061? Mainly interested in:

- Tool diameter
- DOC/WOC
- Feed rate
- Spindle RPM
- Surface finish
- How the machine behaves on longer aluminum jobs

I’m not necessarily looking for crazy material removal rates. Reliability, rigidity, and being able to hold a good finish over larger parts are more important to me.

I’m also particularly interested in the rigidity of the Z-axis/gantry. If anyone has a test indicator and wouldn’t mind doing a quick test, I’d love to know how much movement you see if you indicate against the spindle/Z assembly and apply moderate hand pressure in X, Y, and vertically.

My current router has considerably more Z-axis compliance than I’d like, which is one of the main reasons I’m looking at the Dominator. Actual indicator measurements from a Dominator would be extremely helpful.

I’m considering initially running the machine with the standard/available stepper setup and MASSO, with the possibility of upgrading the motion system later. My main goal right now is to get a rigid 4x4 platform into production quickly.

Any aluminum cutting videos, photos of finished parts, indicator measurements, or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for considering the Dominator Pro and for explaining what you need from it.

I’d welcome owner feedback as well, particularly from anyone doing similar aluminum plate work. I don’t have a documented set of deflection measurements or a directly comparable production example to share, so I don’t want to give you numbers I can’t substantiate.

For an indicator comparison, the applied force, Z extension, and tool stickout all matter. Measurements taken under consistent conditions would be much more useful than an unspecified amount of hand pressure, especially when comparing against your current router.

One clarification: the Dominator Pro comes with MASSO and closed-loop steppers as standard. A later motion-system upgrade wouldn’t resolve structural compliance, so I agree that evaluating the mechanical platform first makes sense.

What thickness aluminum do you typically work with, and what tolerances do your parts require? Are these primarily profiles and drilled holes, or pockets, precision bores, and substantial material removal? That would help establish whether the Dominator Pro is a good match for your production needs.
